Many everyday tasks in Ontario, from renewing a health card to checking road conditions, can now be done online in a few minutes. Here are the official, free services worth bookmarking. Always use the official government address and be wary of look-alike sites that charge extra fees.

Government services

  1. ServiceOntario (ontario.ca): renew your driver’s licence, health card and Ontario Photo Card, change your address and order birth certificates. Licence plate stickers are no longer required for most passenger vehicles in Ontario, but you must still renew your plate registration, which is free.
  2. CRA My Account (canada.ca): view your tax returns, notices of assessment, RRSP and TFSA contribution room and benefit payments.
  3. My Service Canada Account: manage Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security.
  4. Passport services (canada.ca): check eligibility for online renewal and processing times before you travel.

Health

  1. Health811: call 811 or chat online for free, secure advice from a registered nurse, 24 hours a day.
  2. Ontario Health Connect and your local health unit: find vaccination clinics and public health information. Toronto residents can visit Toronto Public Health on toronto.ca.

Getting around

  1. 511 Ontario (511on.ca): live highway conditions, closures and winter road reports, plus a mobile app.
  2. PRESTO and transit planners: manage your PRESTO card and plan trips on the TTC, GO Transit, MiWay, Brampton Transit and York Region Transit.

Local and leisure

  1. 311: Toronto 311 handles potholes, missed garbage pickup, noise complaints and more. Many GTA municipalities, including Mississauga and Brampton, offer similar 311 services.
  2. Toronto Public Library: free e-books, streaming, language courses and the Sun Life Museum + Arts Pass, which gives free admission to Toronto attractions.
  3. Ontario Parks: reserve campsites and day-use passes for provincial parks.
  4. Ontario Energy Board: compare electricity rates and understand your hydro bill.

Tips to stay safe online

  • Type the address yourself or use a bookmark rather than clicking links in texts or emails.
  • The Government of Canada and the CRA will never ask for payment by gift card or cryptocurrency.
  • Report scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
