Racing games range from silly kart battles to near-perfect driving simulations. Whether you want quick fun with friends or a realistic challenge, there is a racing game for you. Here are the series worth playing and how to choose.
Arcade racers: fun first
- Mario Kart series: the ultimate party racer, with items, shortcuts and accessibility options for younger players. Mario Kart World launched alongside the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Forza Horizon series: open-world racing with hundreds of cars, festivals and stunning scenery. Forza Horizon 5, set in Mexico, remains a favourite, and the next entry has been announced with a setting in Japan.
- Hot Wheels Unleashed: colourful tracks and loops inspired by the toy cars.
Sim-cade: the sweet spot
- Gran Turismo 7: beautiful cars, detailed tuning and realistic handling that remains approachable with a controller.
- F1 series: the official Formula 1 games let you race real teams and circuits, including the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Simulation: for serious drivers
- Rally games: demanding stages on gravel, snow and tarmac.
- PC racing simulators: used by sim racers and even professional drivers for practice, with realistic physics and online leagues.

Do you need a racing wheel?
A controller works well for arcade and sim-cade games. For simulations, an entry-level wheel and pedals add immersion and precision. Check compatibility with your console or PC, and make sure you have space to mount it.
Tips to get faster
- Turn on the racing line assist while learning tracks.
- Brake before corners, not in them.
- Practise one car and track combination at a time.
- Gradually turn off assists as you improve.
